get help with your basic medical expenses

The Australian Government provides help with basic medical expenses through a scheme called Medicare. You may be eligible to join Medicare and gain immediate access to health care services and programs.

Medicare is Australia's universal health care system introduced in 1984 to provide eligible Australian residents with access to high quality, affordable health care. The scheme was based on the principle that all Australians should contribute to the cost of health care according to their ability to pay. It is financed through progressive income tax and an income related Medicare levy.

Medicare provides access to:

  • - free treatment as a public (Medicare) patient in a public hospital,

  • - free or subsidised treatment by medical practitioners including general practitioners, specialists, participating optometrists or dentists (for specified services only);

  • - and help with the cost of out-of-hospital care and subsidised medicines

Whilst Medicare ensures that all Australians have access to free or low-cost medical care, members are still free to choose private health services and, in special circumstances, allied health services.
Medicare enrolments and medical benefit payments are administered by Medicare Australia through its network of offices and other information claiming services.
